Bravo TV channels on Sky and Virgin to close

Sky has confirmed the closure date for the Bravo channels as the 1st January 2011.

Sky acquired the Bravo / Living group of channels in June as part of the £160m deal to purchase the Living TV Group.

From January 1 next year, the Bravo family of channels - including Bravo, Bravo+1 and Bravo 2 - will cease broadcasting on all digital TV platforms, including Sky and Virgin Media.

Sky has decided to scrap the Bravo channel because it serves a similar demographic to Sky1.

Bravo, Bravo+1 and Bravo 2 will no longer be available after 31st December 2011.

They are being closed down and their programmes probably reallocated to Sky On and Sky Two.

Their Sky EPG data for the 1st January 2011 shows "No programme data available"

Channel One, the ex Virgin Channel, still has programme data available, so its closure may not be on the 1st January 2011 but later in the year.

Two CBS HD coming channels soon....

CBS, the mass media broadcasting company have been granted licenses for two new high-definition channels, CBS Action HD and CBS Drama HD.

The standard-definition counterparts are already broadcasted on Freesat (channel 137 and 134) and on Sky (channels 148 and 149).

CBS have always been known as a ‘free’ channel broadcaster in this country, with the majority of their channels FTA (free-to-air) available on both Freesat and Sky.

Itis unclear if these will be available for free (on Freesat), or if they will require a Sky HD subscription to view.

If they do lauch free to air then it would be a massive boost to Freesat , which presently only has 3 HD channels on the EPG; BBC1 HD, BBC HD and ITV1 HD.

Three new channels coming in 2011

Three "exciting new television channels" are expected in early 2011. They are expected to be free to air, but may end up being Freesat exclusive and not available on Sky boxes - at the moment this is unknown.

Electric Sofa Media, the UK’s newest broadcaster, plan to launch three new television channels on in early 2011.

The channels are focused on entertainment and film covering all ages:

Film GB – The first ever TV channel devoted exclusively to British cinema - a mixture of classic and new movies, including family favourites and brand new British films.

Sofa Stars – The new home of the best entertainment - entertainment, documentaries, dramas and daily news every weekday evening.

Sofa Screen – A new movie channel targeting 25-44 year olds - tearjerkers, family favourites, thrillers, horror, sci-fi and much more.

It is unknown if these will also be available on Sky boxes, as Freesat do seem to be getting some freesat exclusive channels - like the recently launched Movies For Men. Non Sky boxes should be Ok.

Sky High Definition EPG changes

According to reports, from the 1st February 2011, Sky will be changing the channel line up on Sky HD boxes.

Sky are reportably swapping the Standard Definition (SD) channel numbers with high definition (HD) channel numbers on 1 Feb 2011 for "residential viewers with an HD set top box and a subscription to one or more HD television channels distributed by Sky".

So, for example:
Sky1 HD will be listed at channel number 106 and Sky1 SD will be listed at channel number 170
and probably (although not confirmed)
401 Sky sports 1HD so sky sports 1sd moves to 408.
402 Sky sports 2HD so sky sports 2sd moves to 409.
403 Sky sports 3HD so sky sports 3sd moves to 418.
404 Sky sports 4HD so sky sports 3sd moves to 454.
405 Sky sportsNewsHD so sky sportsnews sd moves to 455.

Is the end of UK TV Online in Spain coming to an end.....

This is from a case in the UK.

TVCatchup is an online TV service, that allows registered users access to TV programms from the UK broadcasters that they may have missed. At the moment, they cannot, under UK law, provide this services outside the UK.

However, the UK broadcasters say that what they are providing in the UK is illegal, and against their intellectualt property rights, by redistributing TV content without the permission of the programmes makers and channels.

However, from the quote below, it appears that TVCatchup are in breach of copyright and intellectual rights. Note that the BBC are not involved in this issue, rather ITV, Channel 4 and Five!

Makes you wonder if the same same will apply in Spain, and all those companies offering UK TV by internet / phone lines, although they say EU Law makes them legal, that Spanish Intellectual Property law say they are not.

The Television Without Frontiers / AVMS Directive was scheduled to become law in ALL EU member states on the 19th December 2009, but only a handful of memeber have implimented it, with a few more only implimenting certain areas.

At the time of writing Spain like the UK, has not yet, fully implimented the Television Without Frontiers / AVMS Directive.

So makes you wonder how companies in Spain say that under EU law their services they are providing are legal.......

If companies in the UK cannot stream UK TV channels to the UK, then it is fair to say that non UK companies also cannot stream UK TV channels WITHOUT THE PERMISSION of the channels themselves...and they cannot hide under EU law, as it is that countries Copyright and Intellectual Property law that seeks permissions from the channels should you wish to redistribute them

[quote]A High Court judge has dismissed arguments brought by TV Catchup Ltd that its online streaming service does not constitute broadcasting in a copyright infringement case brought against TV Catchup Ltd by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

TV Catchup had provided access to the commercial channels as well as those belonging to the BBC as part of a 50-channel package, made available through the web, iPhones and games consoles. Like Zattoo, which withdrew from the UK after a similar dispute, a short delay is made at every channel change to allow the company to insert its own advertisements.

Appearing on behalf of the claimants James Mellor QC argued the transmissions could not be recognized as broadcasts under Section 6 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, but still met with Section 20 as it involved the communication of his clients’ broadcasts.

Anthony Boswood QC, defending, argued that rather than a broadcast of “one to many”, the online transmissions of TV Catch Up were actually “one to one”. He said that in order to meet with Section 20 the transmission had to comply with Section 6 in the first place.

Presiding, Justice Kitchin said Mr Boswood’s arguments were confusing the protected work and the restricted act of communication to the public by electronic transmission of all of those images, sounds and other information. He said that while Section 17 of the Act prohibited making a copy of the broadcast and Section 18 issuing copies of the broadcast to the public, there was no requirement that the copy itself must be a broadcast. Justice Kitchin said he was satisfied the claimants had a real prospect of success.

TV Catch Up will find out in detail at a full hearing in the New Year.

As of Monday night (November 29), TV Catch Up remained available, though channels such as ITV1 and Channel 4, although advertised were absent, others including BBC One, Sky News and, curiously, ITV4 could be viewed.

Last week the New York Southern District Court issued a temporary restraining order preventing the online video service FilmOn streaming programming from the major US networks. However, the site remains operational, including its UK version.

Sky has confirmed the closure date for the Bravo channels

Sky has confirmed the closure date for the Bravo channels as the 1st January 2011.

Sky acquired the Bravo / Living group of channels in June as part of the £160m deal to purchase the Living TV Group.

From January 1 next year, the Bravo family of channels - including Bravo, Bravo+1 and Bravo 2 - will cease broadcasting on all digital TV platforms, including Sky and Virgin Media.

Sky has decided to scrap the Bravo channel because it serves a similar demographic to Sky1.

The company also announced the closure of Channel One, previously Virgin1, as part of plans to concentrate on the Living brand, which gives Sky a vital foothold in the female market after it shut down the Sky Real Lives channels in August.

Today, Sky confirmed that Bravo's most popular programmes will be moved to other Sky channels before the network is officially closed down.

Shows to be preserved include Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Chuck, Leverage, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Star Trek, TNA Wrestling, Sun, Sea and A & E, Motorway Patrol, Highway Patrol and Caribbean Cops.

Lost BBC Channel Islands on Sky 988 in Spain???

If in the last few days, you have lost your reception of BBC Channel Islands on Sky 988, and other BBC 1 regions in Spain then please read the following link

Changes to BBC1 TV frequencies - Sky Channel 988 Channel Islands in Spain

The BBC, not Sky, have been reallocating their channel to different satellite transponder frequencies.

This means that some channel you used to watch with full all day reception may now only be avilable for part of the dat.

One example is BBC1 Channel Islands on Sky channel 988.

Before today, Monday 18 October, this was regarded as being one of the strongest BBC regions for watching BBC1 TV in the Costa blanca and Spain. After todays changes, it is now one of the weakest satellite TV channels!

However, one of the benefits is that now, expats in weak signal areas like Spain, can now watch increease reception of BBC2 - using the BBC2 Wales and BBC2 Northern Ireland variations on Sky Channel 991 and 992

Important changes to BBC TV frequencies this weekend

Important changes to BBC TV frequencies this weekend

There are some important changes happening on the BBC frequencies:

BBC1 West (Bristol)
BBC1 Channel Islands
BBC1 East (West) (Cambridge)

are all leaving their current frequency, and moving to the frequency currently used by BBC2 England - 10773 H
This means that their reception will be as per BBC2 England.
This means that BBC Channel Islands will no longer be recognised as being the strongest BBC1 region.

BBC1 Manchester
BBC1 Leeds
BBC 1 Tunbridge Wells

are all leaving their current frequency, and moving to the frequency currently used by BBC RAdio 5 Live and BBC1&2 Scotland - 10.802 H
This means that their reception will again be as per / similar to BBC2 England.

BBC1 Wales and BBC2 Wales

will be moving from their current frequency to 10.788v - moving from a weaker horizontal to a stronger vertical frequency. So these Wales regions reception will be as per most BBC1 regions ie - almost 24/7 on most big dishes. Meaning some areas will have 24/7 reception of a BBC2 region.

BBC1 Northern Ireland and BBC2 Northern Ireland

will be moving from their current frequency to 10.817v - moving from a weaker horizontal to a stronger vertical frequency. So these Northern Ireland regions reception will be as per most BBC1 regions ie - almost 24/7 on most big dishes. Meaning some areas will have 24/7 reception of a BBC2 region.

Why the changes?
The BBC have had to have a move around to amke space for the BBC1 HD channel.
This will be starting on Wednesday 3rd November.
The BBC had to make space for this channel, which will be on the same frequency as BBCHD channel.
The BBCHD channel will continue to operate showing "the best of the BBC in HD", and the BBC1 HD channel will be a simulcast of BBC1 London.

It will mean that if you watch BBC1 Channel Islands, then you will find that its reception has changed.

It will also mean that you should now have much better coverage of BBC2, either via BBC2 England (reception not changing), BBC2 Northern Ireland, and BBC2 Wales. The latter two regions have almost the same schedules as BBC2 England, with some minor changes for regional programmes.

Freesat and Sky boxes will automatically update themselves on Monday 18th October 2010 with these new frequencies.

Those with Non Sky or Freesat boxes will have to rescan the channels to make sure your boxes have the new BBC1 and BBC2 frequencies.

BBC2 reception Costa Blanca Spain - potentially good news..

According to reports the BBC are changing some of their frequencies and transponders:

BBC 1 NI, BBC 2 NI, BBC 4, BCeebies will move transponder.

BBC 1/2 NI will move to 10,817 Vert - This means that BBC2 should be available for longer periods than is currently possible. It may mean some have 24/7 of BBC2...

Note that BBC2 NI shows almost the same schedule as BBC2UK, but there are some regional changes, so it may not be exactly like BBC2 England.

BBC4/CBeebies will move to 10,802 Horz - no real change in reception there really.

According to reports BBC One HD will launch on November 3rd - on 10,847 V, the same transponder as BBCHD channel.

Tihs may mean that BBC Channel Islands may also be moving to another transponder and so will no longer be the "best" for BBC1 reception, although nothing has been confirmed.

Its that time of year again....losing BBC and ITV satellite signals in the monring!

This happens twice a year.

In the morning between 10am and 11am, you may well be losing signals, especailly on the weaker BBC and ITV channels, for about 10 minutes.

This is normal - or rather there is little we can do about this.

It is a solar outage.

Basically, the sub is directly in line with the satellites and the earth, and its solar energy "swamps" the satellites, and knocks out those weaker signals, especially those frequencies on Astra 2d.

If you look on your prime focus dish at around this time you can monitor this your self, as you will see the shadow of the LNB in the middle of the dish. This is when the sun is swamping the satellite the most. As you see the shadow move away from the dish the signals will reappear.

Like i said this only happens twice a year, for about 7 to 10 days around 10am to 11am.

New Freesat channel to launch – Men and Movies

A new channel from the Movies4Men stable, will be launched soon on Freesat.
It has been annnounced that that “Men & Movies” will launch their new channel on Freesat on the 4th October 2010.
It will be available on Freesat channel 143.
At first it looks like this new channel will be a Freesat exclusive channel, as will appear on the Freesat EPG, but looks that, at first, it will not be added to the Sky EPG.

However, Sky owners should still be able to watch this channel by adding it to the “Other Channels” lists by adding the channel via Services using frequency 11426 H 27500 2/3 – (although some Sky boxes, like Sky+ boxes, are not allowing you to add this for whatever reason!)

Currently the Freesat EPG shows programme information starting next Monday 4th October.
The channel looks to be broadcasting a number of movies from the catalogue owned by Movies4Men, along with a number of documentaries -
The Hindenburg Disaster
Blitz on Berlin
The Battle of Midway
Bombers of the Second World War
World Of Sport
Any Gun Can Play
Kentucky Rifle
Cimarron Strip
Conan The Adventurer
Codename Wild Geese
The new Men and Movies channel will be transmitted from the Eurobird 1 satellite.

This is the official press statement

London, 04 October 2010: The ultimate entertainment for men with action, documentaries, horror, sci-fi, war and westerns wings its way onto UK screens today, as Freesat announces the exclusive launch of Men & Movies on the free-to-air satellite TV service.
The newest channel from Dolphin Broadcast Services, the channel operator subsidiary of Dolphin Television, Men & Movies brings male viewers an exciting array of films, sport and documentary features across an eclectic range of genres. Its addition to the Freesat line-up, on Channel 143, offers a thrilling destination for men who want more choice in their TV entertainment without having to pay a monthly subscription.
The arrival of Men & Movies follows hot on the heels of time-shifted ‘+1’ channels Movies4Men and Movies4Men2 on Freesat, launched last week to give its male audience a wider option of film start times across the schedule*.
Freesat’s Head of Channels, Mark Briggs said, “Whether you’re into war history, visiting sci-fi fantasy worlds, or classics from the wrestling ring, Freesat now gives you exclusive access to a channel packed with content to indulge your die-hard TV passions. Men & Movies further strengthens our entertainment genre on offer as we continue to bring greater subscription-free choice to audiences right across the UK.”
David Goffin, Managing Director of Dolphin Television said: “We are delighted to launch this as a first to the Freesat audiences. We know our film channels are already very popular and we hope this eclectic mix of male-biased entertainment will further enhance their viewing.”

Men & Movies will automatically be added to viewers’ Freesat service via their TVs or digital boxes, meaning men can get their slice of the action straight away without having to manually re-tune.

Bravo and Channel One (Virgin) to close on Sky TV

BSkyB is to close Bravo and general entertainment station Channel One, putting more than 50 jobs at risk, as part of the integration of Living TV Group.

BSkyB has decided to focus on the Living TV channel portfolio, which will see a 25% boost to its programming budget, and the gameshow and quiz channel Challenge. According to media reports, Sky has decided to focus all of its attention on the Living TV channel portfolio and gameshow network Challenge.

Living TV Group, which is home to shows including Grey's Anatomy, Britain's Next Top Model and Sons of Anarchy, currently employs 110 staff. There will be just 58 roles after integration, but it is understood that there are a significant number of positions potentially available in other parts of the BSkyB operation.

BSkyB is understood to have decided to jettison Bravo, which launched as a cable channel in 1985, because it reaches a similar demographic to Sky1 but is not believed to have the same brand equity or reach.

BSkyB is backing Living TV because, outside of sport, it is second only to Sky1 in popularity among its basic pay-TV channels. BSkyB has failed to target the female market as successfully as Living TV, which has a two-year deal with Katie Price. Sky closed its own attempt to target a female audience, Sky Real Lives, earlier this year.

It was decided that Channel One, which was rebranded from Virgin 1 in August following BSkyB's acquisition of Living TV Group for £160m in July, was too similar to Sky3, which it sits alongside as a free-to-air channel on Freeview.

BSkyB intends to "redeploy" the channels' programming, with pay-TV shows moving to other Sky channels and free-to-air fare mostly moving to Sky3.

Bravo is home to shows including Spartacus, Dog the Bounty Hunter and Sons of Anarchy. Spin-off channel Bravo 2 will also disappear. BSkyB has not said what it intends to do with the channel slot.

Challenge will move free-to-air in Channel One's slot, which will effectively double its audience reach, as BSkyB looks to grow its presence in quizzes and gameshows. There are longer-term possibilities of tie-ups with Sky Bet.

Staff have been informed of the integration plans this afternoon with all staff, including the Living TV Group managing director, Jonathan Webb, under review.

The review has been carried out by Sophie Turner Laing, the managing director of entertainment, news and broadcast operations at BSkyB.

"Content is at the heart of Sky's strategy," she said. "Living is already one of the best pay-TV channels around and is obviously a great fit with our existing channels like Sky1. There is so much potential for further development and we intend to increase on-screen investment in Living by around a quarter as part of our expanded channel portfolio. This is a big part of our plans to bring customers great content from channel brands that really cut through."

BSkyB moved quickly to announce the integration of Living TV Group after being given final clearance by the Office of Fair Trading only yesterday.

The Living TV Group integration adds to what is expected to be a major revamp of BSkyB's entertainment programming after the broadcaster struck a five-year £150m deal for the exclusive UK rights to the entire HBO catalogue of shows including The Wire, True Blood and The Sopranos.

Live NFL - American Football back on Channel 4

It's coming home! Channel 4 to show live American football again on Sunday nights

Channel 4 will show American football again this season, bringing back a mountain of memories for long-time supporters of the sport.
The channel will screen the late Sunday match live every week, with coverage beginning at 1am and the matches at 1.20am.
The first match will be between Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys on September 12.

Almost three decades after first appearing on Channel 4, the NFL is returning to its original station in a new deal to broadcast Sunday Night Football.

The NFL was first shown back in 1982 on Channel 4, with its 'American Football' show. The coverage evolved into a mixture of live, highlights and magazines shows. For many fans, the channel will always be seen as the natural home for the sport on British televison.

The NFL was first introduced to the UK on a weekly basis when newly-launched Channel 4 began airing its 'American Football' show in November 1982. The station's coverage evolved into a mix of live, highlights and magazines shows and continued until January 1998, when the Denver Broncos beat the Green Bay Packers in the last game to be aired on the channel.

Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK, said: 'This is very exciting news. Not only does this deal ensure that the NFL’s biggest game of the week and the sport’s most exciting stars are available on free-to-air television in the UK, but it takes the league back to the station that many of our fans grew up watching all those years ago.'

It was only a few years back that interest in the sport seemed to be in terminal decline in Britain.

But with the BBC screening the Super Bowl, and two live games on satellite broadcaster Sky every Sunday, together with the Monday match on ESPN, there has never been more opportunity to watch the action.

What else was happening when Channel 4 launched their coverage in 1982?

A pint of beer cost 62p
Culture Club were number one in the charts with 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me'
The first commercial CD was produced
England went home early from the World Cup finals (some things never change)
Daley Thompson was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Among the most popular shows on TV was Fame - the era's version of Glee
The mullet was the new men's hairstyle of choice
ET and Bladerunner were among the year's big movie releases

The deal with Channel 4 completes the line-up of NFL broadcasters for the 2010 season, which kicks off on Thursday September 9th:

Sky Sports - two lives games every Sunday (6 p.m. and 9 p.m.), plus Thursday and Saturday night games throughout the season and every playoff game live, including Super Bowl XLV from North Texas, on Sunday February 6.
Channel Four - Sunday Night Football every week.
ESPN - live Monday Night Football every week (1.30 a.m.)
BBC TV - Super Bowl XLV live; weekly playoff highlights; Wembley game highlights on October 31.
BBC Radio - weekly live game commentary (9 p.m.) on 5Live Sports Extra.

Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice

I have received an email about the Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice, and thought it would be useful to share the information.

This is a services used by Sky Sports for allowing the viewing of multiple matches, either tennis or football, that are not available on the main Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports 4 channels.

During the US Open Tennis, the match choice allows the viewers to watch the matches on other courts - a bit like when the BBC have Wimbledon on their Multiscreen Sports Interactive streams.

For football, Sky have Match choice, when they show highlights of the days Premier League matches. Although all matches are shown on the main channels, you can still select which of the days matches you want to watch.

Reception of Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3 on the Costa Blanca are easily available on a small satellite dish - say an 80cm satellite dish.

Sky Sports 4 (and Sky Sports News) are on a north beam frequency of the Astra 2 satellites. These north beam frequencies are weakest in Spain around 5pm in the afternoon, and even some big 2.4m satellite dishes may struggle to get these Astra 2 satellite frequencies all day.

And the Sky Sports Red Button Match Choice channels are also on these weaker Astra 2 satellite north beam frequencies, and so may not be available all day - especially on small (80cm and 1m) satellite dishes.

Sky Satellite Default Transponder Frequency Settings For Sky TV in Spain

"What to do if you receive the message "NO SATELLITE SIGNAL BEING RECEIVED" on a Sky digibox receiver?"

"What to do if you are receiving a No Default Transponder message?"

"What is the best Sky Default Transponder frequency setting to use on the Costa Blanca Spain?"

"What is the best Freesat Default Transponder frequency setting to use on the Costa Blanca Spain?"

"My Sky digibox is showing a "searching for listings" message?"

When a Sky receiver / digibox is turned on the first time after being disconnected from the power, the box tries first tries to download approximately 6 hours of EPG information from a specific default frequency (or Transponder) from the satellite. The Sky digibox must have this information to start to work and allow you to watch Sky TV.

Unfortunately, the default frequency (transponder) that the Sky box is initially set to look for (11778) is one of the weaker signals in Spain and the Costa Blanca, especially during the afternoons, even on a 2.4m dish!

So sometime if your digibox is disconnected from the power, your Sky digibox may be unable to find this important frequency and fail to boot up, and display the on screen message "No Satellite Signal Being Received".

Therefore, to assist the digibox to receive the bare minimum information it requires boot up its "default frequency" must be changed to another frequency to enable the initial information download.

The best / most popular default transponder frequency for the Costa Blanca Spain is 12.129, although you can use any of the many frequencies that you can actually receive at the time. Yes ANY frequency will work, as long as you can receive the particular frequency!

In most cases, after a successful download the default transponder frequency will return to 11778. This is normal, and you should not really expect the digibox to keep the default transponder you have manually input.

NOTE: No matter what other people or installers say, changing this default transponder frequency on a Sky box does not increase how long channels are available. It is only used to “assist” the Sky digibox to boot up.

For example if you change the default transponder frequency setting to another frequency setting, say 12129, then when you go to watch Sky News the Sky digibox will use the frequency 12207, the frequency for Sky News.

The default transponder setting of 12129 that you have manually input is not used and overridden.

You do not have to do this process for Freesat or Generic receivers, just Sky receivers.

For more information, including a video on the process of how to change the default transponder frequency" and a downloadable instruction sheet please click on Sky Satellite Default Frequency Settings
