Changes to television over the years

Changes to television over the years

Television has advanced a great deal in recent years, mainly due to the advancement of digital technology in the digital age.

The History of Television

Not so long ago the UK only had 4 television channels.

Now there are hundreds of channels available, available via your TV aerial, satellite, cable and Internet on digital television

Analogue vs Digital Television

Then televisions themselves changed as technology advanced.

From the old cathode ray tubes, to widescreen televisions, to plasma, LCD and now LED.

Rear Projection Television
Plasma Television
LCD Television

And then the channels again advanced.

From Widescreen, to high definition, and now to 3D, with Sky launching Europes first High Definition 3D television channel.

TDT Industry receives complaints about the reception of TDT

Since the analogue TV 'off' on 30 March, the Ministry of Industry has received over 1,760 inquiries from people related issues reception of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT / TDT) until 20 April.

In total, during this period of time, Industry received 86 985 calls, of which 47 739 were treated by agents. Of that number, 88.1% were questions about the process and technology, 8.2% of calls were associated with receiving TDT signals and 3.7% of signal problems.

What is the best satellite for English channels?

What is the best satellite for English channels?

The main satellites that provide the UK with their satellite TV channels are the Astra 2 and Eurobird 1 satellites, located at 28 degrees east of south.

These satellites carry the main BBC,  ITV, C4, Five and "Sky subscription package" channels for the UK.
They are not available on any other satellite system, and so the answer to this question is simple.

The best satellite for English channels is the satellite used by Freesat / BBC / ITV and Sky.

However....

There are obviously many other satellite TV providers operating in other countries. And many of these systems carry the same channels and prgramming as the UK TV service. For example, Discovery Europe sell a version of their Discovery CHannel to individual counties, so you have Discovery UK, Discovery France and Discovery Spain. In many cases the programmes orignal soundtrack is available, and so programmes and movies can be watched with their origninal English speaking audio soundtrack.

In fact, some UK and USA imported programmes are also avail;able in English on TDT - the Spanish digital services available via a TV aerial.

So now the answer to the question "What is the best satellite for English channels?" can be most satellites offer Ebnglish language programmes and channels, but if you want he main UK TV channels like BBC and ITV in Spain, then its the Astra 2 and Eurobird 1 satellites at 28 degrees east of south.

Sky News HD to launch on 6th April 2010???

There are growing rumours that that Sky News HD will launch on April 6, once the UK General Election is called.

This speculation has been further fuelled by Sky News moving operations to Studio B from 30 March so that final preparation can take place in the main newsroom. This has also been fueled by the use of "green screen / chromakey" backgrounds for the channel over the Easter weekend - suggesting changes are happening.

Sky News HD will be available to customers of the Sky+HD service, but there's no word on whether it will be available on freesat. I'll going to stick my neck out and say 'no chance'.

It is anticipated that the channel will launch on Sky channel 517.

UPDATE: 6th April

Martin Stanford (Sky News Presenter) on Twitter re Sky News HD...

"not my call! but weeks rather than days away I think.... "

"no, not today! still loads of work to do; lighting to tweak and so on..."

ITV Central S & ITV Central E on 11973

Sunday 4th April

ITV Central South & ITV Central East available with on frequency 11973 have are currently shoiwng the "Technical Fault" message.

This is happening even in the UK so it looks to be some form of encryption problem, as even people with Sky card in those areas are having trouble watching those channels.

Stronger frequency available for ITV1 for Spain
Hopefuly this will be a tempoary loss, as this is one of the best frequencies to get ITV on in the Costa Blanca.

UPDATE: 23:58
These ITV regions are now back and carrying normal programming. Someone must have pushed a wrong button or something!
