Sky TV: How to programming your Sky remote to control your TV

Sky TV: How to programming your Sky remote to control your TV

Your Sky remote makes use of a special four-digit "code" to operate both your Sky box and your TV, meaning you can use just one remote to handle all Sky functions, to change the TV volume and to turn your TV on and off.

You'll need your four-digit remote control code when:
  • You set up Sky TV by yourself, without the help of an engineer.
  • You change your TV set or Sky remote.
  • Your Sky remote has been without battery power for more than ten minutes.

Look up your code online

To use the online lookup tool, you'll need to know the following three things:
  1. The version of your Sky remote: Remove your Sky remote's battery cover. Depending on the age of the remote, the details will be printed either on the removable cover or inside the battery compartment. Older Sky remotes may not display a version number, but you can work out the version number if you know the date you bought yours (a).
  2. The make of your TV: The brand name, e.g. Sony, Panasonic, LG, Samsung.
  3. The model of your TV: Usually a string of letters and numbers printed on your TV and in your owner's manual.
(a) These dates show when each type of remote was introduced: * Version 4: May 2001 (Sky+ introduced) * Version 6: March 2004 * Version 8: January 2006 * Version 9: July 2011 Tip: As long as your TV's make is recognised, you can leave the model field blank and select Get My Code to display a list of generic remote control codes for your make of TV. Once you have this information, look up your code online (opens in new window).

I've got my remote control code. What next?

Once you've got your remote control code, follow these steps to use it:
  1. Cover the front of your Sky remote, or point the remote away from the TV.
  2. Press the tv button.
  3. Point your Sky remote at the TV.
  4. Hold down the select and red buttons together for a few seconds.
After a few seconds of holding down the buttons, the light at the top of your Sky remote should flash twice.
  1. Enter your four-digit remote control code.
As you press each number button, the light at the top of your Sky remote will flash once. As soon as the fourth digit is entered, the light should flash twice more.
  1. Press the select button.
  2. Cover the front of your Sky remote again, or point the remote away from the TV.
  3. Press the sky button.
  4. Point your Sky remote at the TV again.
Your Sky remote should now be able to operate normal Sky functions and TV functions. For example, try pressing the vol +/- buttons on the Sky remote to check whether the TV's volume changes.

What TV functions can I access through my Sky remote?

Once your Sky remote has been set up to operate your TV, you should be able to:
  • Change the volume: Press the vol +/- buttons.
  • Turn the TV on and off (standby): Press the tv button and then the power button to turn the TV on or off (standby). After turning on the TV, press the sky button to regain control of the usual Sky functions.
  • Switch input mode: Press the tv button and then repeatedly press the help button to cycle through available inputs on your TV, e.g. to switch to using a games console or DVD player. Keep pressing the help button to return to the input that displays Sky TV (usually "HDMI 1"), and then press the sky button to regain control of the usual Sky functions.
Not all TVs will support all of these functions through the Sky remote. If you get stuck, use your TV's own remote control to select the input where you watch Sky (usually "HDMI 1"), and then press the sky button on your Sky remote to regain control of the usual Sky functions.

'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary to be simulcast worldwide to avoid leaks?

Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary special episode will reportedly simulcast worldwide.

Broadcasters yesterday agreed to the “simulcast” to avoid plot leakage.

According to the Sun , global broadcasters have agreed to show the episode at the same time to avoid any leaks.

It's thought that the special episode is due to air on November 23 on BBC1 at 8pm.

It will be the biggest-ever global simulcast of a drama and could fetch more than 100 million viewers from some 200 territories.

The move comes amid fears that the plot will be easily accessible via the internet once the landmark episode is broadcast on BBC One.

As the episode is due to air at 8pm GMT, viewers in LA could be watching at midday, while fans in Sydney would get a 6am broadcast on Sunday morning (November 24).

The simulcast of the 90-minute episode on TV would be in addition to plans to show the 3D episode in cinemas.

Long-running enemies the Daleks, are set to return for the 50th anniversary episode. It will also feature previous Doctor David Tennant, his companion Billie Piper and John Hurt — playing a previously unseen regeneration of the time traveller.

Freeview failure hits Sony recorder owners

Sony says it is experiencing "a major technical issue" after many owners of its DVD recorders lost access to their Freeview TV channels. Dozens of owners have written to the BBC to complain that a malfunctioning software update on Friday has caused their devices to stop receiving or recording Freeview. Many complained about a lack of response from Sony customer support. Sony said it was doing everything possible to solve the problem. "A major technical issue has been flagged to our dedicated team. We will update you asap," the Japanese firm tweeted back on Saturday in response to dozens of messages about the problem. The company's own support forums as well as other independent online sites were filled with complaints from irate users over the weekend. Sony HXD recorders, such as the RDR-HXD870 model, which were updated Friday with the firmware 1.70 fix, seem to be affected by the issue. "It may already have come to your attention that thousands of owners of Sony DVD units have completely lost all their access to Freeview channels," Geoff Cheers, from Chorley, wrote to the BBC. Graham Johnson, from Oxford, wrote: "There are thousands of people affected by this, many of whom, like me, have wasted hours today trying to retune and repair their machine. Many folks, it seems, have also been out and bought a new one. "Sony's Twitter feed and own technical support website are in meltdown with angry customers, and Sony themselves are conspicuous by their absence." On Sunday, a spokeswoman for Sony UK told the BBC: "We are aware of the issue and our engineers are doing everything to solve it."

Sky sticking with Sky 3D

While there’s plenty of bad news around for 3D-TV, with ESPN and the BBC saying that they will not be making any new 3D investments once their current projects are completed, BSkyB is staying loyal to the technology.

BSkyB’s 3D director, John Cassy, in a blog, reaffirms Sky’s commitment to 3D arguing that progress – while not quite what the industry had hoped – was still being made. As of last week, more than half a million BSkyB TV customers had signed up to
watch 3D, “bringing to a close our strongest quarter of growth to date,” Cassy says.

“Certainly the ongoing economic downturn has meant that households are tightening their belts, and people have upgraded their TV sets to 3D at a slower rate than the industry first forecast,” said Cassy in his note. “Some potential viewers may have also delayed experiencing 3D, preferring to wait for new technologies, which mean they don’t have to wear glasses.”

Sky will continue to work with Hollywood on 3D movies and would continue to deliver high-quality 3D material to homes.

A Sky TV spokesman said they expected high-quality 3D displays to be widely available for viewing without glasses in 2-4 years time and “at prices not dissimilar” to today’s HD and 3D sets.

How to subscribe to BT Sports in the UK

How to subscribe to BT's new TV channels before 1 August launch

What's on offer on BT Sports?
BT's package involves three channels – BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN. BT will show 38 Premier League games (compared with Sky's 116), plus Conference Premier football, Premiership rugby and WTA tennis. ESPN has FA Cup and Scottish Premier League games.

How to sign up as a new customer?
There are two main options for those without BT or Sky.

To watch online, sign up for BT broadband (ranging from £10 to £16 a month depending on speed and usage). The additional costs are line rental of £15.45 a month, and a one-off £6.95 fee for the hub, all on a 12-month contract.

To watch them on TV means signing up to BT TV – £199 up front with no contract, or £49 by signing up for a TV package for a year, from £5 a month. Sign up before the end of July and the HD versions of all three channels are free.

I already subscribe to Sky for broadband, phone and TV
There are three options:
1) Add the BT channels via channel 413, for £12 a month (£15 for HD).
2) Switch wholesale to BT – but that limits access to Sky, with only Sky Sports 1 and 2 viewable on a BT Vision box. There is no need to pay for a new phone line, but extra costs will be a BT set-top box, activation costs, increased line rental from £14.50 a month to £15.45 a month, and increased broadband costs from £7.50 with Sky to £16 with BT. However, BT is offering free broadband for six months.
3) Keep Sky TV but switch phone and broadband services to BT. The only additional cost here is the £6.95 for the hub. The total monthly cost, after the six months' free broadband, and including Sky Sports subscription, will be around £73, depending on options selected.

Premier League Live Matches: Sky Sports scores big against BT Sport

BSkyB has muscled out challenger BT Sports to secure key matches at the start of the Premier League season, including Manchester United's clashes with other top teams, José Mourinho's first fixture back at Chelsea and Manuel Pellegrini's first game in charge of Manchester City.

The first round of televised Premier League fixtures published on Thursday reveal that Sky Sports has focused its efforts on keeping out BT from Manchester United's top matches, which attract the biggest football audiences, including the Manchester derby.

BT's top matches in the opening weeks of the 2013/14 season are the London derby clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea and Everton versus Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Sky have exercised their right to first refusal in the first rounds of the season. They also say they will screen every meeting between last year's top four.

Although BT have the rights for 18 first choice matches, Sky have been ruthless in their ability to tell them when these will be.

However, while Sky has plucked the pick of the top Premier League games until December, BT could have a strong end to the season, as it has only exercised five of its 18 first picks, leaving with it with 13 first picks at the business end of the season. Sky has exercised eight of its 20 picks, leaving it with 12.

But the contrast in the early games is marked, with BT's first game of the season Liverpool v Stoke, while Sky is airing David Moye's much-anticpiated first game in charge of Manchester United in a free-to-air live broadcast, in an effort to get one over on BT, which has spent £738m over three years securing the rights to 38 live matches a season. Sky paid £2.3bn for 116 matches per season.

Sky is also showing every fixture between last season's top four clubs and will have shown a live match featuring every Premier League team at least once by 6 October.

But BT does have some prize games in the first half of the season, including Tottenham v Manchester United.

More Confusion about UK Satellite TV by Expat Newspapers on the Costa Blanca and Spain

There seem to be more confusion about the future of UK Satellite TV on the Costa Blanca and Spain, so I hope the following helps to calm nerves and help with some of the truths, lies, facts and rumours that are going around at the moment about “loss of UK TV in Spain!” and the “UK TV Switch off”.
Yes there are changes happening to UK TV via satellite. Basically some of the previous satellites used for UK TV are old and need replacing.

The first new satellite, Astra 2F, is already up and working. Since December 2012 it has been transmitting some UK TV channels on its “UK beam” such as C4HD, 4seven and Channel 5.

The second new satellite, Astra 2E, was expected to be launched on the 20th July 2013, and be operational and transmitting channels from September. However, a failed launch of another rocket at the launch site in Kazakhstan on the 2nd July, will mean that the launch will be delayed. For how long, no-one currently knows, but it is expected to be delayed for about two to three months.

When the channels moved to the first new satellite, Astra 2F, some areas such as the Costa del Sol lost reception of these channels on their current satellite dishes. In other areas, such as between Valencia and Alicante there has been no noticeable change in reception. This proves that reception characteristics vary a lot in Spain, making it hard to generalize on reception across Spain.

No-one will know what reception of the second new satellite, Astra 2E, will be like in Spain, and the size of satellite dish required to receive those TV channels on its “UK beam” until the satellite is actually launched, tested, positioned, operational and transmitting channels.  It may be that reception of Astra 2E may be similar to Astra 2F. It may be totally different. No-one can actually say until it happens.

However, you will not lose ALL UK TV and all Sky TV when the change over happens.

Firstly, some of the UK TV channels are on a satellite that is not part of the change over, and so their reception should not be affected.

Secondly, many of the Sky Pay channels may be transmitted from the new satellites “European beams”, just as they are today, and have been in the past. These European beams tend to be more easily available in most areas of mainland Spain, and so again, their reception should not be affected.

It does seem that a lot of these “you will lose all UK TV IN Spain” scaremongering tends to come from companies and individuals who are selling IPTV / internet TV. Yes, for some IPTV / internet TV may be the only solution. However, if you are in area where you can streceive the UK TV channels direct from the satellite, then you will benefit from the main UK TV channels available subscription free and in high definition. Live UK TV streaming from the internet tends to have a much lower resolution than standard and high definition TV from satellites. And this is more noticeable when used on larger screen TVs.

On-demand services account for 20% of TV viewing in UK

Catch-up or on-demand TV services such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Player now account for a fifth of TV viewing in the UK, according to a survey by YouGov for YouView. In a typical week, the average Brit claims to record just under nine hours of TV and spends around six hours watching TV on-demand. Among 18-24s this rises to nine hours and 20 minutes of on-demand viewing, which is just under a third of their weekly TV.
